This is Who I Am, So This is What I Do.
A profoundly simple phrase reshaped how I think about change: we live from the inside out. Decide who you are — then live like it in every area of your life.

This is who I am, so this is what I do.
I heard this phrase at The Powerful Living Experience in Dallas last March, and it stuck with me. It’s such a profoundly simple phrase. My entire Thrive Framework is based on the simple idea portrayed in this statement: we live from the inside out.
Here’s an example. My niece — shout out to Brianna Castaldi — is an amazing golfer at UNF. She’s been golfing since she was five years old, was on a Tiger Woods team as a young player, and beat many of the records he had set at that age. So she knows what it takes to be a really great golfer.
Here’s how she could apply this. If she were to have a bad season, the first thing she would look at is her performance. What needs to be tweaked? What should I work on? What gym routine do I need to focus on? Assuming she has done all that and is still having a less-than-ideal season, what else could she do?
Using the “This is Who I Am, So This is What I Do” concept, we would apply it in the following ways:
First, make the decision. Am I simply a golf team member, or am I a top 3 golfer?
Once the decision is made — “this is who I am” — I now think through how that person shows up. But not just on the golf course; in every area of life.
- How does a top 3 golfer show up at practice? On time and ready to go.
- How about at dinner? Six times out of seven, I’m choosing the foods that fuel my game by fueling my body.
- How about at the grocery store? I’m skipping the sugary treats and processed junk and sticking to the produce and lean meats.
- What about at a college party? I’m avoiding the drinks and leaving early, because good sleep is paramount.
Bri already had the skill set, the tools, and the disciplines behind the decision. It seemed to me that the only missing piece was to remember that this is who she is.
Now, I can only tell you that this is what happened, and you can draw your own conclusion. But when Brianna and I had that conversation, the very next tournament she was in, she took 1st place individual.
I think you get the idea. Once you decide “this is who I am,” to the best of your ability, let your choices align with that decision. Attempt to live as that person from the moment you decide. Every aligned decision you make reinforces the identity you’ve chosen.
If you’re looking for a better outcome in your life in any area, make a decision about who you are in that area. Then think through how you show up in all of life as that person. And don’t wait to implement — do it to the degree that it is currently possible and remain consistent.
My example is this: I am a leader of people and a light in darkness. So how do I show up? I focus on learning and growth every day. I share ideas and concepts through blogs and posts that help others grow and become the best possible version of themselves. I actively listen to my clients, mastermind members, trainers, friends, and family. I become the person that I would want to follow, so others can follow me.
Love, Marcy
